Banish the Itch: How to Say Goodbye to an Itchy Scalp

Not only is a constantly itchy scalp uncomfortably but it can also be your body’s way of showing you there’s an underlying issue. Many conditions can cause an itchy scalp so today we look at the top 5 culprits and how you can banish that itch forever!

1. Dandruff

Dandruff is when white or grey flakes of skin appear both in your hair and on your scalp, accompanied by an itchy sensation.

Dandruff can occur from anyone of the following:

- Not Shampooing enough

- An overproduction of Oil

- An overproduction of Yeast

- Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

How to Fix it for Good: Switch out your shampoo for a sulphate and paraben free one. Harsh chemicals can often have a negative effect on your scalp and can often contribute to excess sebum production and scalp issues.

Also check your washing technique… last weeks post we looked at how to make sure you’re properly washing your hair (you can check this out here).

2. Lice can cause a constant itchy scalp

If you’ve had head to head contact with people recently, particularly children, then this might be the answer to your itchy scalp.

If you don’t have white or grey flakes indicating dandruff, then it may be time to check for head lice. They’re extremely good at camouflage, with their eggs being hard to spot and even when fully grown!

How to Fix it for Good: If you’ve got lice, you need to purchase a specially fine toothed comb and some head lice treatment you can find in a pharmacy. And if you’re looking for a more natural way of solving the Lice Issue try Tea Tree Oil! Not only is it really great for your scalp but Lice absolutely hate it so it’ll get rid of them in no time!

3. Contact Dermatitis can cause a constant itchy scalp

Contact dermatitis is a form of allergic reaction on your skin. If you’ve recently tried a new hair product then this could be the reason behind your itchy scalp. It is fairly common to react to hair dyes, but you could also have had a reaction to a new shampoo, conditioner, hair spray or hair mask.

It might be just one ingredient that causes you to react, so read the labels thoroughly if you have known allergies.

How to Fix it for Good: Stop using the suspected irritant product immediately and wash your hair and scalp gently but thoroughly. If you’re sensitive to beauty products anyway, look for those that are hypoallergenic.

4. Product build up can cause a constantly itchy scalp

Hair styling products, particularly those using silicones are notorious for clogging up the hair follicles and in turn causing irritation.

The build up of styling products can interrupt the hairs' growth cycle too, which includes the shedding of old hair, and when your cycle is out of sync it can really affect your scalp!

Your scalp might be flaky, dry, red and itchy and these can all be a sign of product build up if you frequently style your hair.

How to Fix it for Good: Try exfoliating your scalp with a specifically designed product like Our Purifying Scalp Scrub that targets product build-up and rebalances your Scalp’s natural pH.

5. Dry skin can cause a constant itchy scalp

Dry skin itches wherever it is on the body. Dry skin on the scalp can be caused by over-washing your hair or exposure to harsh conditions (super cold weather or frequent hot blow drying). In essence your scalp may just need a little rehydration!

How to Fix it for Good: Look to hair masks and oils to give your hair a well-earned drink. Products rich in amino acids and oils such as Argan Oil rehydrate and replenish both your hair and scalp. Our Healthy Hair Mask is loaded with key hydrating ingredients that nourish your hair and scalp. We recommend leaving it on your hair for a minimum of ten minutes before washing out for a super moisturising experience!
