We’ve all seen the ads for hair gummies, hair vitamins, and even hair drinks that promise to give you luscious locks but do they actually work is the million dollar question?
WHAT THEY SAY THEY DO
With ingredients like biotin; folic acid; vitamins D, A, C, and E, these vitamin supplements often promise to revamp your hair from the inside out or words to that effect. But the big problem is these pills aren’t backed by approved data, and the research you can find on them are often questionable at best. “A lot of the studies you find in support of hair supplements are actually funded by the brands themselves” Our Founder Caroline says “which naturally would lead you to question to voracity of any results.”
Additionally, because there isn’t really a uniform set of ingredients, strengths, or even formulations across different brands, there isn’t really a definite answer as to which ones may work and more problematically, which formulations could potentially mess with your body
SO SHOULD YOU JUST DITCH THESE ALTOGETHER THEN?
“Not necessarily”, Caroline says. You see the bigger issue with vitamins isn’t really around the clinical evidence its more than you’re ingesting something and assuming that your body will then take these nutrients and filter them to your hair and scalp. But your body doesn’t always work this way. It maybe that other parts of your body are deficient and need a little more help and if that’s the case, then your body will divert these vitamins there instead. And this is the fundamental issue with all vitamins that you take…you cant control where they end up, so you could be spending a lot of money without seeing any real benefit in terms of hair growth.
On the other hand, if your body is deficient in certain vitamins then taking any form of supplements will definitely be a benefit. “First and foremost I would advocate you have a nutritionally balanced and healthy lifestyle” Caroline explains “Your hair is a key marker for your overall health so if your hair looks lacklustre and unhealthy it’s a good reflection of what’s going on inside.”
HOW ARE GINGER & PEARLS PRODUCTS DIFFERENT TO VITAMINS?
The key difference between us and vitamins is that vitamins are taken orally and our products are applied topically to your hair and scalp. Our products work directly on your hairs growth cycle targeting the key causes of hair loss, while supplements are more of a ‘blast everything and hope it sticks’ approach. And what's more our products are based on independent clinical studies so you know exactly what to expect in terms of results.
Ultimately there’s absolutely nothing wrong with taking supplements (although do not take any iron supplements before consulting your GP first as these can be extremely harmful if not needed) but if you want to see tangible results its best to have a more targeted approach.
