It’s been what feels like an age since we were able to visit the hairdressers but with that magical date of salons opening fast approaching we’ve put together our top six tips to ensure your get the most out of your hair appointment and leave with a glow.
ARRIVE WITH CLEAN HAIR
Sounds like a bit of an obvious one but always show up for your hair appointment with clean hair…. ideally washed the night before if possible with a gentle shampoo (avoid scrubbing your scalp though in case you make it sensitive ahead of the appointment).
There’s a common phrase that dirty hair holds better than clean but this is never further from the case than when you are getting your hair dyed as hair dye takes best on clean hair.
BE PATIENT IF YOU'RE HAVING A COLOUR
Whether you’re getting your roots touched up or going for a total colour overhaul, you want to be realistic about the process. Even something as simple as a touch up can take time to get the correct tones.
If you’re undergoing a major change then it may take more than one appointment to achieve your dream. It’s always worth asking what’s realistic to get done in one appointment ahead of the appointment so you know what to expect.
BE HONEST ABOUT YOUR HAIRS HISTORY
We cannot underestimate how critical it is that you tell your hair stylist what your hair history is, whether it’s a Brazilian blowout, box dyes, purple shampoos and in particular any hair conditions or hair loss you’ve experienced. Not only will it potentially determine what is safe to put on your hair without reactions but could save your hair from potential damage.
It’s also worth chatting with your stylist about budget and upkeep to ensure you’re not getting yourself in too deep. Certain colours and cuts require more trips to the salon so if your goal is to be low-maintenance, ask your stylist for something that will still look great as it grows out.
BE OPEN TO ADVICE
While it’s always great to go to your appointment with an idea be open to advice as well as your stylist is the expert. It may be that that drop dead gorgeous colour or cut just won’t suit your skin tone, face shape, even your hair type so be flexible and talk through what you want to see how you can adapt to fit you.
Pictures are the easiest way to communicate to your stylist what you like and don’t like. It’s worth bringing several examples from different angle and in different lighting if you can to really make sure you stylist understands the look you want.
Be sure to get very specific on details as well— if you’re just getting a trim make sure you say how much as a trim and getting rid of dead ends can be two very different lengths.
CHOOSE YOUR TIME WISELY
If you are planning an overhaul try to book an appointment earlier in the day. Not only are these appointments generally easier to get but it means your stylist will have more time to devote to you. It’s also worth booking a consultation beforehand if you can and ensuring you block out enough time on the day.
