How To Winter-Proof Your Hair

We often think of the dry heat of Summer as being damaging to your locks but Winter can be just as harsh thanks to dropping temperatures and the simultaneous blasting of indoor heaters. And with the days starting to get shorter and winter just around the corner we knew it was time to give our top tips for ensuring your hair stays healthy and strong during the colder months.

Here are Our Top Tips to Protect your locks this Winter...

1. FIGHT THE HEAT DAMAGE

While it’s debatable whether we will have the traditional ‘Party Season’ this year, any form of heat and styling tools can cause damage to your hair. To protect against this not only use a heat protection spray but also use a repair product like Our Healthy Hair Mask which is formulated with Shea Butter and Vegan Keratin to not only lock in moisture but also to strengthen and reinforce brittle hair follicles.

2. MINIMISE TOWEL DRYING

We all know that central heating and hair frizz often go hand in hand but an important factor in fighting the frizz is how you handle your hair when it’s wet. It’s so important not to wring out your hair as this will raise your hairs cuticles not only contributing to frizz but also long term to damaged locks. Instead you want to squeeze your hair gently within the towel to remove excess water.

If you’re using a normal cotton towel it’s also worth investing in a microfiber cloth as this will absorb excess moisture faster and reduces the time you need to blow dry your hair (thus reducing any potential risk of heat damage too).

3. CAREFUL WASHING

While the amount you wash your hair often comes down to how greasy it is, the longer you can leave it between washes the better as this will prevent it drying out in the cold snap. Ideally you want to limit the amount you wash to just two or three times a week.

If you do find your hair and scalp are overly greasy then it may well be worth trying a scalp scrub like Our Purifying Scalp Scrub which is specially formulated to rebalance your scalp’s pH and remove scalp build-up – both of which contribute to excess sebum production and greasy roots.

4. EAT YOUR WAY TO GREAT WINTER HAIR

We know we often include diet as one of our top tips for great hair but the right nutrients and vitamins really can help to keep your hair strong and healthy. Foods such as pulses, almonds, carrots, and avocado are all great at improving hair strength. Ideally you want to look out for foods rich in natural oils and vitamins that boost your immune system.

5. GET SMART ABOUT CENTRAL HEATING

While we all need a bit of warmth in the colder months, central heating is not good for your hair. Parched hair is made drier from the constant change in temperature from blistery cold to cosy warmth. One way to restore damaged locks is with Our Healthy Hair Mask with an ultra-nourishing blend of essential oils, and Shea butter to restore the strength and vitality of your locks. It fortifies dry, weak strands from root to tip creating soft, healthy and shiny hair from root to tip.

6. ALL HAIL THE WINTER HAT

When you’re outside protect your hair from the harsh crisp air by wearing a hat, scarf or coat. You can even wrap your hair up into a bun which will help lock in that moisture. Just make sure you avoid a tight ponytail and top bun as these can create pressure and root damage.

7. MASK UP ONCE A WEEK

Darker nights and cosy fireplaces can create the perfect ambience for a good pamper session… so why not incorporate a mask into your selfcare routine? It’s an easy and effective way to treat your tired winter hair and replenish any moisture and strength lost from the harsh winter weather. A deep conditioning treatment like Our Healthy Hair Mask is a girl’s dream to healthy, gorgeous hair. This rich mask not only gives deep nourishment but visibly increases your hair’s health leaving your hair looking fuller and healthier.
